When is Capricorn Season?
Capricorn Season starts December 22nd and ends January 19th. It is the final astrological sign of the Gregorian calendar. Capricorn season also starts at the time of Winter Solstice, the official mark of winter and a powerful time indeed, which you can learn more about in our recent article Winter Solstice Ritual Offering.
21st December: The Great Conjunction
Aside from Winter Solstice taking place one day before the beginning of Capricorn season, another astronomical occurrence of great importance happened on the 21st of December 2021, known as the Great Conjunction. This rare astrological event is where the planets Jupiter and Saturn come astoundingly close together where they in this case met in the sign of Aquarius. These two planets are closer to each other than they have been since 1226. For many astrologers this is the mark of the beginning of a new era – one filled with a bigger sense of community and ideals of collectivity. And since we discuss below how Saturn is the ruling planet of Capricorn, we can imagine Saturn’s current star role in the sky will have an even bigger influence on the Capricorn energy flowing for the next astrological month.
What is Capricorn’s ruling planet?
While we are learning that every astrological sign has its ruling planet, in this case Saturn for Capricorn, it makes sense to look into the qualities of the governing planet Saturn to learn more about what makes Capricorn season so unique. Saturn is the planet of strength and power, known for industries yet tranquil qualities, which can even be a bit melancholic. The offerings of Saturn are to instill discipline and commitment to challenges, which show up in life. Often called “The Lord of Karma” Saturn asks us to take authority over our own life direction and experiences, and this asking of self-responsibility can be as challenging as it can be rewarding.
Capricorn’s elements and traits: Earth, Cardinal sign
Since Capricorn is an earth sign (along with Virgo and Taurus) it is know to share such traits as loyalty, stability, practicality and general “grounded-ness”. I often like to think of a tree with its roots deep in the earth below. The flip side to these positive traits might be a possibility for over materialism when out of balance. Along with being an Earth Sign, Capricorn is also a Cardinal sign (along with Aries, Cancer and Libra) sharing such attributes as initiation, leadership, exploration, and independence. Combing these traits create the uniqueness that is Capricorn. So in a sense, Capricorn is a sign, which embodies leadership skills on the earth plane. Symbolized by the Mountain Goat, an animal notorious for their stubbornness and who is depicted always aiming for the top of the mountain, we have a sign, which has a forward moving energy with lasting impact on the physical world with material success. While we can al greatly benefit from the extra available Capricorn qualities more acceptable during this time, to stay in balance we can try to remember to also and at the same time keep value of the inner realm of our feelings, especially focusing on happiness and gratitude, which we believe is the true road to success.
